Health Hazards of Eating Processed Food

If you have read my ebook, you already know that I’m not a fan of processed food.  After watching the movie Fed Up, I was convinced that eating processed food was like putting poison into my body.  I made a vow never to eat it again and have kept that promise for over a year.  I revisited the idea of processed food being harmful to the human body just a few days ago and this is what I found:

  1. Research shows us that processed food contains a large amount of salt, sugar, and oil.  This combination is highly rewarding to the brain, which leads to the overconsumption of empty calories which are void of valuable nutrients.  Added sugar alone is proven to be extremely harmful to the body.  According to Kris Gunnars, added sugar can cause tooth problems by providing easily digestible energy for the bad bacteria in the mouth, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance leading to type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, hormonal and brain changes, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Gunners states, “Keep in mind that all of this does NOT apply to fruit. It is almost impossible to overeat fructose by eating fruit.”
  2. Processed food contains artificial ingredients such as preservatives, colorants, flavor, and texturants, which are all toxic and can be cancer causing.
  3. Processed food is low in fiber (fiber is lost during processing).  This is a serious issue because fiber is necessary for bodily functions.  It helps normalize bowel movements and helps maintain bowel heath.  Fiber also lowers cholesterol, helps control blood sugar levels, and aids in achieving a healthy weight.
  4. Processed food overloads the liver and runs through our system very fast leaving people who consume it full for just a short period of time.

I don’t know about you, but these are reasons enough to stick with eating whole foods and keeping my body and mind healthy!  I intend to live a very long time for my family, especially for my little girl.
